Since the same formats can be used also for Google Maps and Google Maps Mobile, it is possible to view the data from handheld devices, providing a tool that is available on-site during the network deployment. With the conversion tool in place, Google Earth is easy to use, free of charge and a strong tool for presenting and reviewing network plans. In this paper we show how Google Earth can be used for visualizing network plans, in particular for FTTH networks, supporting automated GIS-based planning by reducing the need for physically visiting sites in order to inspect and verify the plans. We develop and present a simple procedure for converting Danish GIS data into the KML/KMZ formats viewable by Google Earth, and show that it produces mappings which are precise enough for the current planning purposes.
